TechGirls Summer 2020 Program
Technology Immersion Program for 3rd-8th Grade Girls
For this summer only, the program is entirely virtual through Zoom
to adhere to social distancing guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Program participants will need a laptop or desktop with video/audio capabilities and a Zoom account. Participants will need an email address and a parent's permission to share video/audio during the virtual program for educational purposes and collaborative work. (The program will not be recorded.)
The program is completely free of cost for girls to participate.
Prior programming knowledge is not required and we want to encourage girls
of all abilities and experiences to participate.
You must register – go to the site to register - techgirlsus.org
During the program, participants will use block programming to develop an interactive mobile app using
MIT App Inventor that addresses a UN Sustainable Development Goal of their choosing.
From this experience, program participants will be put in the shoes of technology entrepreneurs
through a startup simulation, allowing them to see the possible career pathway
of creating their own technology company.
As a result of participating in the program, girls will be introduced to computing principles
while working to create a product that aims to solve an issue they feel passionate about
and which is personally important to them. In doing so, program participants will gain a holistic understanding of computer science and information technology that translates from education to industry. This process will allow each girl to discover her potential and aspire to continue future endeavors in the field. Through this hands-on experience, they will better understand the relevance of computer science
in their own lives and the world.
